Haller students craft ornaments for Capitol tree

Lanette Ziegler’s life skills students at Haller Middle School received the honor of creating ornaments for the Christmas tree placed in the Capitol building in Olympia.

The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians agreed to let the students use its salmon logo to make bentwood boxes as ornaments.

Students brushed streaks of thinned white paint on strips of brown paper to create the look of birch wood. Once the paint dried, the students used a template of the salmon logo and stippled red and black paint over the stencil. The final step was to tie raffia on each ornament for hanging.

Ziegler used the opportunity to teach her students about the importance of salmon to the Stillaguamish Tribe.

Students barricade principal’s office — with food

Fryelands Elementary School students and staff donated 1,240 items and $500 to the Sky Valley Food Bank for Thanksgiving after a weeklong food drive sponsored by the school’s Student Senate. The students focused on “working together makes it better” with the goal to fill the principal’s office with donations. The resulting fort-like stack of donations reached over Principal Jeff Presley’s head.

Students plan another drive for toys and gifts for the Christmas season.
