God rest ye, sullen gentlemen: There’s some discussion about how the 1971 Joni Mitchell song, “River,” about a heartbroken woman wishing for a river to “skate away on,” became a Christmas classic. “We needed a sad Christmas song, didn’t we?” Mitchell told NPR last year.
Not to throw Joni into a deeper funk, but “Coventry Carol” has her beat for downbeat Christmas song by more than 400 years. Everybody sing: “Herod the king in his raging … .”

Was she seeing a man about a donkey? Donald Trump’s latest attack labeled Hillary Clinton “disgusting” for leaving the stage during the recent Democratic candidate debate for a restroom break.
We’re not certain what’s so disgusting about using a restroom, but perhaps Trump, R-Depends, has another solution that he relies on.

Don’t know much about history: On this day in 1788, Maryland ceded land for the seat of the national government, allowing for the creation of the District of Columbia.
Unless Washington, D.C., does something productive with it soon, Maryland says it wants the land back.
