Rotary Student of the Month is tenacious

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Student of the Month for January is Lizbeth Colocho, a senior at ACES High School.

Colocho, who came to the United States from El Salvador as a high school freshman, started attending ACES last fall after missing a semester at Mariner High School because of a car crash. She enjoys math, and also volunteers feeding the homeless in Seattle with her church.

Mountlake Terrace teen a state Scholar

Haeley Johnston of Mountlake Terrace High School has been selected as one of five Washington Scholars in Career and Technical Education.

The selection puts her in the running for an invitation to the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

President Obama last summer signed an Executive Order expanding the U.S. Presidential Scholars program to establish a new category of outstanding scholars in career and technical education. The Presidential Scholars program is among the nation’s most distinguished honors for high school students, and has not been expanded since 1979.

Students of the Month at Lynnwood, Meadowdale

The Rotary Club of Alderwood-Terrace sponsors the Career and Technical Education Student of the Month program at Lynnwood High School.

Culinary arts student Antionette Calkins was honored for November. Marketing student Hannah Hepler was honored for December. Both are seniors.

The Rotary Club of Edmonds honors junior class students at Meadowdale High School each month for leadership, scholarship and citizenship.

Grace Wilson was honored for October, Zach Plummer for November, and Josie Applegate for December. They each received a plaque and an Edmonds Bookshop gift certificate.

Arlington woman headed to West Point

Anna Fujinaka of Arlington will be Rep. Rick Larsen’s principal nominee to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York.

Fujinaka attends Everett Community College. She is a member of the Civil Air Patrol where she serves as the Arlington Composite Squadron Cadet Commander and has received numerous awards. Fujinaka volunteers with the Arlington Food Bank and practices kick boxing and mixed martial arts at the Arlington Kickboxing Academy.

She was one of three principal nominees to various military academies named Jan. 19 by Larsen. The three will be granted spots at the academies this coming fall pending successful completion of their current schooling. Larsen also will make 24 other nominations to the nation’s five military academies.

Mukilteo equestrian student competes

Nikki Bell of Mukilteo competed in the Color Breed Congress Nov. 10-15 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is a senior elementary education and equestrian science major at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.

Bell was second-place Reserve Champion in Ideal Pinto English and in Discipline Rail English and third place in Hunter Under Saddle.
