Lots of heart at special Elks prom

Local high school special education students gathered Feb. 13 at the Everett Elks Lodge for a Valentine’s Prom. Live music was provided by the inclusive Voices of the Village performance ensemble. Guests enjoyed a buffet and each received a corsage or boutonniere as well as Amazon and McDonald’s gift cards, a stuffed toy, a treat bag and prom photos.

Poets extol Eagle Fest ethos

This year’s Arlington-Stillaguamish Eagle Festival, held Feb. 5-6, featured a haiku contest.

Sea Cadet Corps marks change of command

U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps Lt. j.g. John Steenmeyer relieved U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps Lt. Cmdr. Matt Thompson as commanding officer of the Naval Station Everett Division of the Corps during a Jan. 23 change of command ceremony at Naval Station Everett.

Thompson has been promoted to regional director for the Pacific Northwest.

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a federally chartered nonprofit civilian youth organization that introduces young people ages 11-17 to the seagoing military services while encouraging community service, discipline and teamwork. Typically, all adults involved are volunteers; many are current or retired military.

League to fete Noborikawa

The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County has selected Kinuko Noborikawa as the recipient of its 2016 Democracy in Action Award. Noborikawa has energetically started and led numerous programs throughout the community since 1984. She recently retired as a senior environmental planner for Snohomish County.

Noborikawa will receive the award at the League’s birthday luncheon, to be held at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Everett School District’s Community Resource Center, 3900 Broadway. Those who wish to attend should RSVP by Feb. 20 with a $25 check to Judy Chapman, 200 James St., Unit 205, Edmonds, WA 98020.
