Bakerview subdivision gets go-ahead again from county

EVERETT — Snohomish County planners have said —for a second time — that a controversial housing development can move ahead next to a dormant landfill, if it adheres to specific conditions.

Planners in 2014 granted initial approval to the Bakerview subdivision, only to have the project sent back the following year for more study. Among concerns raised by neighbors were plans to address the former Go-East landfill, which shares the 40-acre site on the 4300 block of 108th Street SE, outside of Everett. They appealed to the county hearing examiner, who agreed on key points.

The 97 proposed homes would go up next to the old landfill, not on top of it. In the early 1980s, underground fires smoldered at the dump for years. Operations ceased in 1983.

P&G East LLC, of Kirkland, is seeking to build the project. The latest plans alter the homes’ layout and offer a more detailed proposal for formally closing the landfill.

The county issued a mitigated determination of nonsignificance for those plans Sunday. The deadline to file appeals with the hearing examiner is May 22.
