Missing lane markings at shopping complex are owner’s duty

Street Smarts reader Julie Hanner, of Marysville, worries about the fender bender potential for drivers turning into the busy Winco shopping complex off 116th Street NE.
Eastbound drivers have a dedicated left-turn lane and traffic signal to enter the complex. The problem? Westbound drivers have a dedicated right-turn lane into the same driveway, with no sign requiring them to yield.
“They both try to use the one lane,” Hanner notes.
Public Works staff with the city of Marysville note that this is a private roadway.
An aerial photo provided by the city shows that there used to be white lane markings dividing the driveway into two lanes, separating eastbound and westbound traffic entering the complex.
In response to Hanner’s concerns, city staff sent the Bellevue-based property management company a letter on July 6 asking that it restore the pavement markings “as soon as possible.”
