Dig up family roots in Arlington
The annual Northwest Genealogy Conference in Arlington kicks off with a free day Wednesday. People can learn about genealogy for beginners at 1 p.m. at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center, 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd. Conference events continue Thursday through Saturday. Registration is accepted the day of the events. The conference is put on by the Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society and features nationally known speakers on topics such as DNA, record finding and where to start with family research.

Those birds sure are angry
School-age kids are invited to an Angry Birds Structure Challenge, 2 p.m. Monday at the Mariner Library (520 128th St. SW) or 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Brier Library (23303 Brier Road). Learn how to build stable structures, then test them under an “Angry Birds” game-like attack. For ages 5-11.

Safe boating class
The Everett Sail and Power Squadron offers “America’s Boating Course,” a seven-week class in the fundamentals of safe boating, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 11 to Oct. 30, at the Corporate and Continuing Education Center of Everett Community College, 2333 Seaway Blvd.
Students who take the class and pass a final exam qualify for the Washington State Boater Education card. Class cost is $120. Register online at everettcc.edu/ccec.
