Several Gregory Award nominees represent Snohomish County

Seattle has its own version of Broadway’s Tony Awards.
As the Puget Sound region’s theater scene continues to grow, the Gregory Awards become more important.
The ninth annual Gregory award night is set for Oct. 23 at McCaw Hall at the Seattle Center, and the list of nominees is impressive.

People who attend Village Theatre productions (especially “Dreamgirls”) in Everett will be interested in the following nominations:
Tom Sturge of Village Theatre is nominated for outstanding lighting design for his work on “Dreamgirls.” Karen Ann Ledger is nominated for outstanding costume design, also for “Dreamgirls,” which played Everett in July.
Alexandra Henderson is nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a musical for her work as Lorrell in Village Theatre’s “Dreamgirls.” Sophia Franzella also was nominated for her portrayal of Tweeny the kitchen wench in “A Proper Place.”
Nathaniel Tenebaum, who played singer James “Thunder” Early in “Dreamgirls” is nominated for outstanding supporting actor in a musical. Angela Birchett is nominated for outstanding actress in a musical for her turn as Effie in “Dreamgirls.”
The outstanding actress nominees also include Snohomish High School graduate Billie Wildrick as Babe, the leading role in “The Pajama Game” at The 5th Avenue Theatre, and Kamiak High School graduate Diana Huey as Ariel in The 5th’s production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”
Matthew Kacergis, known to Village audiences for his work in “Les Miserables” and “Billy Elliot,” is nominated for outstanding actor in a musical for is portrayal of Prince Eric in “Little Mermaid” at The 5th.
As you might guess, the nominees for outstanding musical production include “Dreamgirls” and “The Little Mermaid.”
The awards are named for Gregory A. Falls, who is credited with creating the Seattle area’s theater scene. He was the founder of ACT — A Contemporary Theatre — and a former chairman of the University of Washington’s School of Drama. Falls died in 1997.
