Monroe School District to put replacement levy on ballot

MONROE — The Monroe School District will put a replacement school program and operations levy on the Feb. 13 ballot. The current maintenance and operations levy, passed by voters in 2014, expires in 2018. The new levy would provide funding through 2022.

Even if approved, school district-levied taxes are expected to drop due to a shift in state funding laws. The replacement tax would levy $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed property value, the maximum allowed under new state rules. The current tax levies $3.06 per $1,000 assessed value.

The owner of a $300,000 house would pay about $450 annually.

The money would be used for safety programs, transportation, special education, athletics and more.
