EVERETT — The cause of an Everett apartment fire that hospitalized two young sisters Monday remains under investigation, officials said Thursday.

It might be another week until investigators have narrowed down the possible causes of the blaze, Everett Assistant Fire Marshal Steve Goforth said. They also are looking into where exactly the flames originated.

The fire appears to have started in a ground floor apartment in the 10115 block of Holly Drive. Flames quickly spread to the second and third floor.

Firefighters rescued the 3-year-old sisters from the burning building. They were treated for smoke inhalation at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. They were released the next day.

The blaze displaced six families.
