State may remove Bothell property from contamination list

BOTHELL — The state Department of Ecology will consider removing a Bothell-area property from a statewide list of contaminated sites following the owner’s efforts to address problems stemming from illegal dumping of heavy metals and petroleum.
The site at 1515 196th Street SE, west of Bothell-Everett Highway, landed on the Ecology Department’s radar after complaints in 2005. Snohomish County code inspectors also investigated junkyard conditions around that time.
The property owner removed about 2.5 tons of contaminated soil in 2017, after sampling potentially contaminated areas on the site, the Ecology Department reported. The agency no longer considers the site a threat to human health or the environment. People have until April 2 to comment on the department’s decision to take it off the hazardous sites list.
The 2.5-acre parcel is in unincorporated Snohomish County and zoned for urban center development. A grading permit is pending. The county last year reviewed a proposal to build townhouses there.
