Homelessness conversation
Everett Faith in Action, a group of local pastors who work on social issues, plans the second and final part of the series, “Who Is My Neighbor?”
The event is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. It will focus on how government, nonprofits, faith groups and others can respond to homelessness.

Panel discussion on gun violence
A panel discussion, “Keeping Campus Safe,” about school shootings is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Everett Community College, 2000 Tower St. Topics include gun legislation, bullying and harassment, and mental health. Scheduled panelists include Title IX Coordinator Becky Lamboley and psychology professor Brett Kuwada, both of EvCC, along with state Sen. Guy Palumbo and firearms attorney and Second Amendment expert Lenden Eakin. Q-and-A follows.

Hiking through history
Author Judy Bentley gets folks ready for hiking season with “Hiking the History of the Mountain Loop Highway,” 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Arlington Library, 135 N Washington Ave. Featured hikes are Monte Cristo, Old Robe and the Lime Kiln Trail. Registration is encouraged.

Fire engine dedication
Marysville Fire District dedicates two new fire engines and invites the community to celebrate at an open house, 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Station 62, 10701 Shoultes Road. The event includes a traditional engine “wetdown,” tours and more.

Learn to identify local trees
Kevin Zobrist, author of “Native Trees of Western Washington” and a Washington State University forestry professor, will discuss native trees found on Camano Island at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Island County Multipurpose Center, 141 N East Camano Drive. Learn how to identify trees you encounter in the wild, their special features, adaptations and ecological roles.

Japanese-American history
Author Mayumi Tsutakawa will speak about her family’s history, including internment during World War II, at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday at Everett Community College’s Henry M. Jackson Center Wilderness Room. “The Pine Tree and the Cherry” is free and open to the public.

The Mukilteo Way Garden Club is accepting applications for a $1,000 scholarship. High school seniors, college students or others pursuing a degree in a horticultural field are invited to apply by May 31.
