EVERETT — The Everett Merchants defeated the visiting Northwest Honkers 4-2 in the Pacific International League season-opener on Friday at Everett Memorial Satdium.

Merchants starting pitcher Cody Culp began the game by retiring the first 11 batters he faced before running into trouble in both the fourth and the fifth innings, allowing runners to reach second and third base. However, Culp struck out the batter for the final out in both frames to snuff the threats.

Everett scored their initial run of the new season in the first on a passed ball. In the fifth, they added a second run off a passed ball, a bases-loaded walk and a two-out single by Nolan Smith.

The Merchants look to build an early winning streak with a doubleheader against the Seattle Wallbangers starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Everett Memorial Stadium.
