Help with hospital district

Snohomish County Public Hospital District 2, also known as the Verdant Health Commission, seeks applicants to fill the seat that was vacated by Dr. Bruce Williams. Deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 17.

Applicants must provide a letter of interest with a biographical sketch, resume or curriculum vitae, proof of residency within the district boundaries and proof of voter registration.

Class for owners of wooded property

Owners of wooded property can learn to care for their trees and forests at Washington State University Extension Forestry’s “Forest Stewardship Coached Planning” class, to be held 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 18 to Nov. 6, in the Stillaguamish Conference Room at Arlington Public Works, 154 W Cox St.

Learn how to assess your trees, avoid insect and disease problems, enhance wildlife habitat, avoid getting fleeced when selling logs, assess your soil, reduce wildfire risk around your home, and more. Craft a personalized forest stewardship plan, which could help lower property taxes. A private site visit is included.

Class cost is $140 before Sept. 1, $170 after. Registration required.

Join the League

The League of Women Voters of Snohomish County invites prospective new members to a planning retreat, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 at Edmonds Unitarian-Universalist Congregation, 8109 224th St. SW. Registration is requested.

The League, which has roots in the women’s suffrage movement, has helped high school students register over 500 students to vote, provided election observers and held election forums, among other efforts.

Families of color sought

Those interested in helping children in the foster care system — and families of color in particular — are invited to a Fostering Together information session planned for noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 at Greater Trinity Academy, 11229 Fourth Ave. W, Everett. Remember 811 on 8-11

Building a fence or installing a mailbox? Planning a deck or planting a tree? The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission is using Aug. 11 to remind the public about its 811 service. Call 811 for a free utility locate before any digging project.

In 2017, there were 3,115 reports of damages to underground utilities in Washington. The commission issued more than $100,000 in penalties against excavators for violations of the dig law.
