MONROE — A Monroe High School student was killed by a freight train Friday afternoon in Monroe.

The boy, 15, was on the tracks around 3:45 p.m. at N Kelsey Street and U.S. 2, when an eastbound BNSF train struck and killed him, Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said.

Several other students were in the area at the time.

Officers were investigating what led up to the incident.

City police and state troopers blocked streets for about four hours at the scene.
