Three takeaways from the Silvertips’ 3-0 win over the Saskatoon Blades

The Everett Silvertips blanked the Saskatoon Blades — head coached by former Silvertips player and assistant coach, Mitch Love — 3-0, on Wednesday night. Dustin Wolf recorded his first shutout of the season and fifth of his career by stopping all 23 shots he faced. They are 8-5-0-0 on the season. Here are the three takeaways:

Statement win?: For my money, this is Everett’s most impressive result of the season. By defeating a talented, rested squad— the Blades were playing on five-days rest — on the road just 24 hours after playing a juggernaut Prince Albert team showed resilience, and quite frankly, that Everett can compete with some of the best teams in the Western Hockey League.

Penalty kill remains strong: One of the unsung heroes for Everett this season is its penalty kill unit, which ranks second in the WHL with a 87.3 percent success rate — Prince Albert is first at 90.8 percent. It came in clutch last night, limiting the Blades to 0-for-5 to

Everett’s team defense is often overlooked when considering Everett’s early-season strengths, and the penalty kill certainly ties into that.

Dawson Butt continues to evolve: I wrote about Dawson Butt’s evolution as a hockey player earlier this season, but by adding another goal on Wednesday, he’s tripled his goal total from last season with three in 2018-2019. With five points through Everett’s first 14 games of the season, he’s on about a 24-point pace. That would be a handsome total for someone who was thought of as a fourth-line grinder/enforcer entering the season.

Hockey Canada released its rosters for the upcoming Under-17 World Championships on Wednesday and Silvertips defenseman Ronan Seeley was placed on Team Canada White, while it was announced Silvertips head coach Dennis Williams will coach Team Canada Red.

The event takes place from Nov. 3 to Nov. 10 in Saint John and Quispamsis, New Brunswick.
