Rachel Riley’s Stevens Pass article provided exactly the kind of local perspective on national trends that makes a Herald subscription worthwhile (“At Stevens Pass, epic lines, not-so-epic times amid staff shortage,” The Herald, Jan. 1).

If our democracy is to survive we have to start by rejecting our national fetish for corporations, stock markets, and obscene wealth. Stories like Riley’s can help us recognize that greed is not America’s salvation; it is our enemy.
