Stanwood boys fall to surging Ferndale in district semis

EVERETT — The third-seeded Stanwood High School boys basketball team suffered a 72-65 loss to seventh-seeded Ferndale in a Class 3A District 1 Tournament semifinal Wednesdsay night at Everett Community College.

The Spartans trailed by a point midway through the fourth quarter, but Ferndale (12-10) pulled away with a 14-4 run to clinch its first state berth since 1996.

Damian Toney scored a team-high 19 points for the Golden Eagles, who finished with five scorers in double figures. Conner Walcker added 17 points, Jazen Guillory scored 16, Luke Wells had 11 and Mark Schlichting chipped in 10.

Stanwood (14-7) fell despite making 11 3-pointers.

John Floyd hit three 3-pointers and scored a team-high 19 points for the Spartans. Owen Thayer drained four 3s and had 15 points, including 12 in the second half. Kaeden McGlothin added 12 points and Max Mayo had 10 for Stanwood.

The Spartans face second-seeded Shorecrest in a winner-to-state, loser-out game Saturday.

Ferndale advances to face fourth-seeded Mountlake Terrace in the district title game. After a 1-7 start, the Golden Eagles have won 11 of their past 14 games.
