50 years ago (1961)
Dr. Ed Chase of Everett Yacht Club was named 1961’s “Yachtsman of the Year” for Puget Sound. The longtime EYC member and past commodore was selected for the honor at an awards banquet in Seattle. Chase, an Everett physician, was the first to receive the Jerry Bryant Trophy, symbol of the “man of the year” honor for yachtsmen of the Pacific Northwest.
The smorgasbord planned by Everett Band Mothers Club in the EHS Cafeteria was getting plenty of advertising. Among the students publicizing the event with posters were Carol Lueth, Anne Gilmore, Don Corliss, Lance Johnson, Bob Groeschell and Carolyn Mattox.
25 years ago (1986)
Ironically as air traffic technology was bringing the world closer together, traffic was continuing to move Everett farther away from Sea-Tac. Although a ban was on regularly scheduled freight and passenger service at Paine Field, there was pressure from some quarters to lift the ban at the 50-year-old airport.
Brother and sister team Holly and Jackie McGlothlin of Stanwood recently were honored in KING-TV “Making a Difference” banquet. They volunteered entertaining in area nursing homes, one Christmas performing free in dozens of homes.
