Bike safely
Granite Falls Fire District 17 and the Granite Falls Police Department plan to host a Bike Safety Rodeo today at Mountain Way Elementary School.
The rodeo is for children and their parents who want to learn how to be safe while riding their bikes. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 702 N. Granite Ave.
Participants can meet firefighters and police officers, take part in a bike safety course and helmet fitting and have the chance to win prizes.
Driving it Home: Most car crashes aren’t accidents. They are preventable. Collision detectives are trying to reach teens and their parents with that message before it’s too late.
From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today, the Snohomish County sheriff’s Collision Investigation Unit is scheduled to host “Driving it Home” at Stanwood High School, 7400 272nd St. NW in Stanwood.
Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death among U.S. teens, and teen drivers are involved in three times as many crashes as all other drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The program features an analysis of several deadly crashes, along with testimonials from grieving parents.
Detectives also will conduct a mock car-pedestrian crash outside the high school.
Several cars involved in serious and fatal crashes will be on display outside Stanwood High School. Mothers of young people killed in local crashes will be on site to answer questions.
The program is free. It is not suitable for small children.
