OAK HARBOR — Lake Stevens pulled out ahead in a close first set, 25-23, and rode the momentum to 25-14, 25-20 victories in the subsequent sets to defeat Oak Harbor 3-0 in a non-conference match Thursday at Oak Harbor H.S.

“The first match was pretty close all the way through,” Oak Harbor head coach Kerri Molitor said. “Just back and forth … the second game seemed like it was over so fast. I think we tend to like the long matches a little better.”

The match pitted Oak Harbor against former Wesco North rival Lake Stevens. The Wildcats dropped to 3A this season and will compete in the Wesco 3A conference.

“We’re still excited about the season,” Molitor said. “It’s the first time we’ve been in this 3A league.”

Senior outside hitters Brooke Larsen (14 kills) and Megan Home (nine kills) led the way for the Vikings.

“Their outside hitters attacked well,” Molitor said. “Lake Stevens played steady, they played tough.”

Marchelle Bostic added 20 assists for Lake Stevens, which improved to 3-0 overall.

Kelsey Terrazas-Cooley and Janine DeGuzman had 15 and 13 digs respectively to keep Oak Harbor (2-1) close. Setter Jordan Faralan had 16 assists.

Oak Harbor faces another former conference team in Arlington on Tuesday, in the league-wide event Dig For a Cure to support cancer research. It then faces Lynnwood in it’s inaugural Wesco 3A game the following Tuesday, September 28th.

“We know that we’re more of a defensive team,” Molitor said. “We know that we have to be really aggressive and just persistent and outlast them in long rallies…We’re going to work on more offense so we have something to bring on the court.

“They’re really excited about the season,” Molitor added. “I’ve got great kids to work with.”
