GRANITE FALLS — Joshua Golston went from being a candidate to an incumbent.
The Granite Falls City Council appointed Golston to the vacancy created when Kathy Ganung resigned the seat to move out of state.
Ganung’s position was up for re-election this year and she did not file to keep it.
Golston and John Smith filed for the position in June.
Golston and two others, Floyd “Butch” DeRosia and Hock Rood, applied for the vacancy after Ganung resigned Aug. 1, city clerk Darla Reese said. Smith did not apply. The council appointed Golston to the position Aug. 12. Three council members voted yes, one voted no and one abstained.
Golston and Smith will face off Nov. 3 to keep the seat for the next four years.
Golston, who works for Thomco Construction of Lake Stevens, is married with two small children. He and his family moved to Granite Falls in April of last year, he said.
“I just really want to kind of help steer the future for the community and for our children,” he said regarding why he ran for office and applied for the vacancy.
Smith did not respond to a phone call or an e-mail seeking comment.
