In March at the Class 4A state tournament, Lake Stevens High School post Sean Stickney proved he was among Washington’s best players. This past weekend, the burly senior crossed the state border and displayed his skills at a showcase in Portland.

Stickney scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in about 14 minutes Saturday in Washington’s 101-80 victory over Oregon Saturday in the annual Northwest Shootout all-star boys basketball game. He helped fuel Washington’s game-changing second-half surge.

“His level of performance was a great reflection on him. I was really proud of him,” said Lake Stevens boys basketball coach Mark Hein, who attended the game at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center.

Mountlake Terrace coach Nalin Sood coached the victorious Washington all-star squad. The 6-foot-4 Stickney gave “great effort” and was a positive representative of the Western Conference, Sood said: “Sean had as much an impact as anyone on the Washington (team) with his rebounding and hustle.”

Stickney earned All-Tournament first team honors last month at the 4A championships and was named to The Herald’s All-Area first team. He wants to play in college but has not committed yet, Hein said. Several two-year colleges (including Everett Community College and Skagit Valley College) and a few four-year programs (Pacific Lutheran University and Pacific University of Forest Grove, Ore.) continue to show interest.

“He’s excited to play after high school,” said Hein. “He’s looking at anything that comes his way.”

Three local caddies win Chick Evans scholarships

Three seniors from Wesco South schools received the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship, good for full tuition in 2009-10 at the University of Washington or Washington State University. The local winners are Edmonds-Woodway’s Jack Spano, Shorewood’s Maria Tulloch and Shorecrest’s John Freitag. All of them will attend Washington. Scholars are picked based on their caddie record, academics, financial need and character. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

More college commitments

The following area student-athletes signed or committed to play sports after high school: Roger O’Neill, Meadowdale (Saint Martin’s basketball); Nasser Kyobe, Meadowdale (University of Puget Sound football); Evan Howard, Archbishop Murphy (Lower Columbia College baseball); Brittany Ruscha, Mariner (Skagit Community College basketball, volleyball and tennis); Mollie Postma, Everett (Endicott College volleyball).

Cascade’s heavy hitter

When the Cascade baseball team needs a clutch hit, senior Beau Wilson steps up. Through last week, Wilson was hitting .386 with nine extra-base hits (six doubles, one triple, two home runs) and 17 runs batted in 13 games. “He’s been our big guy all year. He’s had tons of big hits and he’s always been the power hitter on the team,” said Barrett Davis, Wilson’s teammate.
