50 years ago (1958)
Coca-Cola bottling Co. of Everett volunteered to distribute plastic hearts and heart cards to businesses throughout the city. Mickey Harmon, sales manager, handed a heart to Harry Taylor, route manager. The Coca-Cola people volunteered their efforts for the Everett Heart Association, which would culminate its fund campaign on Heart Sunday.
Phil Williams, manager of the Everett Safety Council, presented a certificate of achievement from the National Sand and Gravel Association to Ray Compton of Associated Sand and Gravel Co. in recognition of the company’s 1957 safety record.
25 years ago (1983)
The 23rd annual Lenten Luncheon Services, sponsored by the YMCA and the Greater Everett Ministerium, was getting under way this week. Speakers and chairs this included Sister Dorothy O’Brien, Carol Munding, the Rev. Mertin Leigh, Doug Stave, Wanda Adams, Chris Little, Ernie Miller, the Rev. J.B. Brandt, the Rev. Gerald Sundby and Jay Baker.
An entirely new industry had appeared on Smith Island, Wood Waste Recovery. It was a processing plant that turned junk into money by devouring mud, chunks of woods, rocks and other debris scooped up from the nearby Weyerhaeuser log yard.
