PUYALLUP — The Darrington boys basketball team’s rally fell short of earning it a ticket to state.

But don’t worry: the Loggers haven’t exhausted all their options yet.

Bear Creek jumped out to an early lead and held off Darrington for a 52-49 victory in a winner-to-state game at the Class 2B Tri-District tournament Monday night at Chief Leschi High School.

The Loggers’ still have a chance to make it to the state tournament through the consolation bracket. Darrington (18-5 overall) plays Seattle Lutheran in a winner-to-state game at 8:15 p.m. Friday at Chief Leschi.

“We’ve got a shot Friday to make it all better,” Darrington head coach Jeff Bryson said.

A loss Friday still would not mean an end to the Loggers’ dreams of making it to the state playoffs. Darrington would have one last chance to advance by winning the fifth-place game.

Bear Creek (20-2) took control of the game from the start, opening a 15-point lead in the first quarter before the Loggers fought back to cut the deficit to seven heading into the second period.

“They came out ready and we didn’t,” Bryson said of Bear Creek. “They dominated us like we haven’t been dominated all season. We spent the rest of the game battling back.”

Led by Mike Parris and Cory Hoveskeland, the Loggers rallied and were able to briefly pull ahead in the third period.

“We did a nice job of inching back,” Bryson said, “We got a three-point lead at one point, but they got some big shots and overcame us.”

Darrington ended the third quarter trailing by three at 37-34, a margin the Loggers were unable to close through the final period.

Parris finished with a team-high 18 points and Hoveskeland chipped in 14 points for Darrington.

Bear Creek was led by Jamie Meyer’s 18 points. Garrett Benson added 12 points and Nate Castle had 11.
