Everett honors scholar athletes

High school football is known for its two-way stars — well-conditioned athletes who start on offense and defense — but it’s time to honor kids who stand out with a different sort of two-way success.

The Everett School District announced its fall 2007 scholar-athletes Thursday. The program recognizes one male and one female from each high school (Cascade, Everett and Jackson) who has a minimum 3.2 grade-point average, plays a varsity sport and serves the community. After getting nominated by coaches, winners are picked by school administrators.

Here are the honorees:

Cascade High

Kristin Villanueva, volleyball — has a 3.79 GPA, serves as Associated Student Body treasurer and is captain of the volleyball team. Villanueva, a setter/defensive specialist, helped coordinate a Dig for the Cure match that raised awareness about breast cancer.

Paul Heer, football — has a 3.3 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. The wide receiver/cornerback volunteers with Special Olympics.

Everett High

Katie Gebert, cross country — has a 3.99 GPA and is involved in Everett’s leadership program. The team co-captain advanced to the 2006 Class 3A state meet and will try to qualify for the 2007 state meet Saturday at the Northwest District championships.

Andy Monro, tennis — has a 3.69 GPA and is a team co-captain. He is a model of great sportsmanship and dedication to the team, according to administrators who chose him for the honor.

Jackson High

Germaine Salmine, dance — has a 3.41 GPA, is vice president of the school’s Honor Society and is a member of the Jackson High School Congress. Salmine is a dance team captain and provides leadership and motivation, administrators said.

Richard Oam, tennis — has a 3.68 GPA in honors and advanced placement classes, is a four-year letter winner and placed sixth at the 2007 4A state tournament.

Sweet redemption

One play after having a potential interception get away, Snohomish football player Nick Oglesby got a second chance. Oglesby, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound senior linebacker, picked off Lake Stevens quarterback Nick Baker Friday in the fourth quarter of Snohomish’s 45-21 victory. It was the first varsity interception for Oglesby, who failed to hold onto an errant pass a few seconds earlier.

Happy home team

The South Whidbey girls cross country team, fresh off winning a Cascade Conference title over the weekend, brings a No. 1 ranking (state coaches’ poll) into the 2A District 1 meet. The Falcons, who bumped Bellingham out of the top spot, will battle No. 2 Sehome, No. 3 Bellingham and No. 8 Archbishop Murphy.

Key test tonight for Monroe

Perfection is just two victories away for the Monroe volleyball team. Monroe (6-0 in the Western Conference North Division) finishes the regular season this week against Oak Harbor (also 6-0) and Snohomish (2-4). Monroe plays host to Oak Harbor tonight in a fight for first place. If the Bearcats prevail tonight and beat Snohomish Thursday, they’ll complete their second consecutive undefeated Wesco North season. Monroe hasn’t lost a North match since Oct. 18, 2005 (3-0 versus Snohomish).
