TALKING POINTS
Well, I can’t think of two more different performances than the one Everett produced tonight and the one the Tips had in Friday’s insipid 3-0 loss at Seattle. Everett played with far more life tonight right from the start, and clearly it made a difference against a good Moose Jaw team that played pretty well itself — the final score was not indicative of the competitiveness of the game. If the Tips want to accomplish anything in the second half of the season, this is the type of effort they have to put forth on a regular basis.
Excellent, excellent game in goal by Shayne Barrie, his best as a Silvertip. His lateral movement was outstanding tonight, and he made several great saves during the first two periods when the game was still close. If Barrie can play this well on a regular basis, he’ll be Everett’s starter the next two seasons.
Everett’s long lost power play also made an appearance tonight, going 4-for-7. It’s amazing how much of a difference moving the puck on the power play makes as it freed up all kinds of passing and shooting lanes. One can’t help but notice the power play had success on a night Kyle Beach was taken off the No. 1 unit.
It was odd to witness the amount of dislike between teams that see one another once a season. It was not a clean game tonight.
TURNING POINT
In a game that finished 6-1, it feels strange to say the turning point came on a save. It was 2-1 midway through the second period when Barrie robbed Ryley Grantham on a rebound. Thirty seconds later Clayton Bauer scored for Everett to give the Tips a secure two-goal lead.
HIT OF THE DAY
Everett’s Taylor Ellington produced one of the best hits of the season by a Tip when, in the third period, he flattened Terrance Delaronde with an open-ice shoulder charge.
THREE STARS
First star: Jonathan Harty, Everett. Two goals and helped revive Everett’s power play, scoring on each of the Tips’ first two chances with the advantage.
Second star: Barrie, Everett. If the game was close he would have been the first star hands down.
Third star: Zach Hamill, Everett. Two assists and was noticably more active than Friday.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Jordan Knackstedt, Moose Jaw. Set up Moose Jaw’s goal with a beautiful feed and was strong on the puck all night.
LINEUP NOTES
For Everett, center Zack Dailey was scratched because of a groin injury suffered late in Friday’s 3-0 loss at Seattle. The Tips also juggled their lines, with Bauer taking Beach’s spot on the top line with Hamill and Dan Gendur. Beach played with Vitali Karamnov and Jordan Mistelbacher, while Shane Harper shifted to center on a line with Lukas Vartovnik and Matt Ius. Defenseman Mike Alexander was back after missing the past two games with the flu. Also back was head coach John Becanic, who also missed Friday’s game because of illness. New defenseman Tyler Kieffer has been added to the roster and will wear No. 28, but he did not play. Forwards Eric English and Tyler Eskesen were healthy scratches. There were also several youngsters running around Comcast Arena in suits as 15-year-old prospects Tyler Parker, D.J. McGrath and Kyle Janzen are in town for the weekend.
For Moose Jaw, center Riley Holzapfel is with Team Canada at the World Juniors. Right wing Martin Filo is out with a knee injury. Forward Justin Maylan and defenseman Ty Ariss were healthy scratches.
