Tips for handling school shopping

Back to school is a stressful shopping time. Kids covet new crayons, clothes and backpacks.

According to Tawra Kellam, publisher of livingonadime.com, there are ways to economize and teach sound economic lessons. Tips:

  • Wait for the class list of supplies and stick to it.

  • Keep an eye on garage sales and thrift stores for lunch boxes and basic supplies.

  • Give your student money for basic items, such as backpacks, and let him or her chip in from allowances if they want fancier models.

  • Don’t buy whole new wardrobes. Wear items from last year that still fit. Stock up on socks, underwear and jeans when they go on sale.

  • Check out last year’s school supplies and reuse what you can. If the calculator still works, why buy a new one?

  • Limit activities with fees to one at a time.

Fair gets its first sit-down eatery

The Explosion basketball team will be represented at the Evergreen State Fair in a new way.

For the first time, there will be a sit-down dining house, sponsored by the team, on the fairgrounds.

It will be located next to the Family Fun Stage and 500 Display Hall Barn.

Get a reservation for your group so that everyone can eat in comfortable surroundings as they are waited on by Explosion staff, players and dancers.

    Casper’s will prepare the food.

  • Wayne Roberts is the person who is growing his hair out to donate it to Locks of Love, which uses the hair to make wigs for ill children. Roberts’ name was incorrect in Kristi O’Harran’s column on Page B3 Friday.

  • A man bitten this summer by a wolf-dog hybrid at Blue Stilly Park was walking on the beach when he was attacked and did not have to undergo treatment for possible rabies exposure. A story on Page A1 Wednesday was incorrect.
