Wildcats pitchers get a workout

OAK HARBOR – Junior shortstop Marshall Lobbestael cracked a solo home run in the fourth inning as the Wildcats edged the Lions in a non-conference game at Oak Harbor High School Thursday afternoon.

The two teams used a combined eight pitchers as they evaluated their staffs in preparation for league play starting next week.

“It was by design,” said Oak Harbor head coach Jim Waller. “We threw five kids today. They need to get some innings so we can see what we’ve got.”

Oak Harbor pitchers James Leach, Peter Skurdal, Mark Radach, Gary Ellis and Jeff Lang combined on a nine-hitter. Radach (1-0) earned the win and Lang picked up the save for the Wildcats.

Lynden grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Jordan Head hit a two-run home run.

Lobbestael finished with three hits and he scored three runs. Sophomore Johnny Encinas added a pair of hits for Oak Harbor.

Ernie Martinez and Mark Radach each hit doubles for the Wildcats, who host Sedro-Woolley at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Arlington 8, Ferndale 8: At Ferndale, John Gastineau and James Spear had two hits apiece and each scored a run for Arlington in a non-conference game called due to darkness. Starting pitcher Joey Dettrich pitched 32/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out four while allowing no earned runs.

Ingraham 5, Orcas Island 0: At Eastsound, Ronnie Burns went 3-for-4 with a double as the Rams blanked the Vikings in a non-conference tilt. Orcas Island pitcher Josh Mason was a workhorse, throwing 156 pitches and allowing just five hits while striking out 10.

Skyline 8, Shorecrest 6: At Shoreline, the Scots were dropped in their season opener against non-league opponent Skyline. Jonathan Quiray was 2-for-5 with one home run. Shorecrest’s Andrew Gniffke batted 2-for-3 with two RBI and Griffin Sweazey was 3-for-5 with one RBI.
