Go fish: The Darrington fire department’s annual kids’ trout fishing derby runs from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday at Fortson Ponds. The derby includes prizes from Cabela’s and other sponsors. The event is free but kids need to bring poles and tackle. Expect the weather to be rainy and chilly.
Volunteer for Habitat: Habitat for Humanity of Snohomish County is seeking volunteers at its stores in Lynnwood and Everett. No previous experience is required. To register, go to http://habitatsnohomish.org/register-as-a-volunteer.
Transfer station closure: A postponed closure of Snohomish County’s Airport Road Recycling & Transfer Station is scheduled from May 1 through May 21. The recycling area will remain open for regular hours, but yard waste will not be accepted.
During the closure, commercial haulers and vehicles with mechanically unloading dump-style containers can use the county’s Cathcart facility on 8915 Cathcart Way, Snohomish. Customers who unload their garbage by hand will need to use county transfer stations in Mountlake Terrace or Arlington.
The three-week shutdown will allow crews to repair compactors and the tipping floor. It was originally scheduled over the winter before being delayed.
