EDMONDS — Everett football coach Will Soren got quite a birthday present Friday night. After his team fell behind 24-6 to Lynnwood at Edmonds Stadium, the Seagulls rallied for a 41-32 Wesco 3A victory.

After the game Soren didn’t want to talk about his personal big day. He preferred to gush

over the special teams play that spurred the Seagulls to comeback.

“Special teams was the turning point in the game for us,” Soren said. “That really set the tone in the second half.”

Meko Baca returned two kicks for touchdowns, one for 80 yards and the other 92. Soren praised Baca but credited the whole team for the big returns, which didn’t come on gimmicks.

“Both were just our base return,” He said. “We had some good blocking up front. Our wedge guys played big.”

In the fourth quarter Everett led 35-32 but Lynnwood drove deep in Seagull territory, aiming for the winning touchdown. Everett defensive back Blake Williams snagged an interception in the end zone and a few plays later quarterback Riley Ayers scored his second rushing touchdown of the night to ice the game.

Corey Hoerner had two rushing touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions for Lynnwood in the losing effort. Soren praised the Royals who are still winless on the season.

“Every point they got, they earned,” Soren said.

The Seagulls coach was not happy with his team’s second straight slow start.

“Second week in a row we came out flat,” Soren said. “We will fix that this week.”
