SULTAN — Sultan deputies and firefighters plan to duke it out on the softball field this weekend.

The Sky Valley Battle of the Badges is planned to raise money to support the Boys & Girls Club. The club’s building in Sultan was destroyed in a fire on Christmas Eve.

The softball tournament is planned for 11 a.m. Sunday at Sultan High School.

It is free for people to come and watch, Sultan Police Chief Jeff Brand said. In addition to the action on the diamond, they can meet a police dog and check out police and fire rigs.

There also will be T-shirts and food for sale. All proceeds will go to the Boys & Girls Club. The event was the brainchild of a Sultan sheriff’s deputy and a few firefighters.

The guys got together and talked about ways to get more involved, Brand said. They thought about how local people had lost personal belongings in the fire, such as pillows, blankets and games. They wanted to do something to help.

Deputy Daryl Hansmann is one of the event organizers.

He was out at the scene after the fire and saw a child crying because his stuffed animal had been destroyed, he said.

He thought about how local children rely on the club.

“It’s a tough area for families, because there’s not a lot of high-income people out here,” Hansmann said. “A lot of parents work really hard to give their kids things, and I was just kind of thinking this is a way to replace that.”
