Freshman point guard leading Getchell boys basketball

The Marysville Getchell boys basketball team has faced its share of challenges this winter. Caleb Koellmer, who was one of the Chargers’ best players last year, hasn’t played this season after suffering a knee injury during a November football game. Cameron Stordahl, another key player, missed several games earlier this season with an ankle injury.
MG has had to navigate through a tough Wesco 3A schedule with a young core group of players learning on the job, with a starting lineup that features one freshman and two sophomores.
“We’ve battled some adversity,” Marysville Getchell coach Corby Schuh said. “We knew we’d be a work in progress. We’ve battled some tough Wesco teams well. We just haven’t been able to get over the hump in terms of scoring (MG averages 52 points per game). Our defense has been good.”
The Chargers (6-11 overall, 2-7 Wesco 3A) appear to have found their point guard for the next several seasons in 6-3 freshman Malakhi Knight, who is already one of the team’s top players.
“He’s an unbelievable athlete,” Schuh said. “We’ve steadily given him more and more responsibility, and will continue to do so. He’s our floor leader, and as the season goes on, when we need a big shot down the stretch, he’ll take it.”
