Footbridge coming down
EVERETT — A main strip of Everett’s waterfront will be blocked off for about 12 hours Saturday, so contractors can tear down a footbridge at the site of the former Kimberly-Clark tissue plant. Crews will close West Marine View Drive between Everett Avenue and the entrance to the Naval Station on 19th Street from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for the project.
The bridge is one of the lingering artifacts of Everett’s mill town history, but new owners at the pulp mill site asked to have it taken down as a condition of its sale, according to the state Department of Transportation. The Kimberly-Clark mill shut down in 2012. Over the following years, sales stalled due to disagreements over how to clean up the 66 acres of polluted land.

Learn boating safety
The Lake Stevens Police Department plans a boating safety class May 12. Registration is open now through May 5.
The free class fulfills the requirements for state boater education. It’s planned from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lake Stevens Educational Service Center.

Humane Society seeks volunteers
The Humane Society at HappyPaws Farm seeks volunteers to help walk large dogs afternoons at the shelter, 19933 Old Burn Road in Arlington. Volunteers should be at least 18 years old and experienced with dogs. Other volunteers also are needed to cut grass, raise funds for dog and cat food, for an animal food bank and vet expenses, and other tasks.
