MONROE — Evening work to repave Highway 522, including the Snohomish River Bridge, will mean a lengthy detour this summer.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is overseeing the $4.8 million project to apply a new layer of asphalt. Weekly work between Highway 9 and the Fales Road/Echo Lake Road offramp, from Maltby to Monroe is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

Without any weather delays, spokesman Marqise Allen said, the project should finish by the end of September.

About 34,000 vehicles used the highway every day in 2016. That’s an increase of about 2,000 vehicles in just two years. The same stretch of highway was last repaved in 2001.

Also planned are raised striping along 3 miles of the highway shoulders in both directions between Fales Road/Echo Lake Road and the eastbound lanes of the Snohomish River Bridge.

Eastbound traffic will be rerouted to Highway 9 and U.S. 2 on a 24-mile detour for two weekends in late July and early August. A single lane will be open during the day between overnight closures.
