HEADS UP
Waste Management holiday schedule
Waste Management will not be providing pickup services on Dec. 25 or Jan. 1. After each of those days, service for all customers will be delayed one day.
For Wednesday customers, service will be on Thursday. For Thursday customers, service will be on Friday. For Friday customers, service will be on Saturday.
Additionally, Waste Management customers may recycle Christmas trees with no artificial dust or spray in their yard waste bins, as long as the trees are cut so all pieces can fit in the bin.

Fire dangers
The Marysville Fire District will display wreaths at all five of its stations through New Year’s Day, to remind people about fire safety. Each wreath is covered in green bulbs that change to red when there’s a fire in the district, and to white when a firefighter dies in the line of duty in the United States.
The wreaths are supposed to serve as a reminder to prevent fires during the holidays.
The fire district gives these tips:
Stay in the kitchen while cooking. Christmas Eve and Christmas are two leading days when home fires are caused by unattended cooking.
Put out candles when you leave the room or go to bed. Don’t place candles near decorations or other flammable items.
Make sure Christmas trees are at least three feet from any heat source.
Always turn off the Christmas tree lights before leaving the house or going to bed.
OPPORTUNITY
Vote for Noodle and the Everett Animal Shelter
A local dog with a spinal cord injury is a finalist for the Petco Foundation’s Holiday Wishes People’s Choice Award, and could win up to $25,000 for the Everett Animal Shelter.
Noodle, who was adopted from the shelter a few years ago, was nominated for the award because of the dog’s ability to get around, despite having health problems.
People can vote for Noodle until Friday by visiting www.petcofoundation.org/holiday-wishes.
By making it to the final round of the competition, Noodle and his owner have already won the shelter $5,000.
Scholarship for Mukilteo students
The City of Mukilteo is looking for future college or trade students to apply for a $1,500 scholarship.
Students must be pursuing higher education in the fall and live in the Mukilteo School District to qualify. Up to six students statewide will receive the grant from the Association of Washington Cities’ Center for Quality Communities.
The application requires a personal essay and reference letter. An applicant from Mukilteo will be selected by a committee and then forwarded to the AWC with an additional letter from Mayor Gregerson.
Applications are due Feb. 25.
