Chevy is competing with the big boys when it comes to the 2019 Traverse AWD Premier.
Traverse is a three-row SUV that seats up to eight adults, which is absolutely loaded with features and creature comforts. It all comes with a price – in this case close to $50,000.
Traverse is offered in L, LS, LT, RS, Premier and High Country trim levels, with the base model coming in around $30K. My tester was powered by a 3.6-liter, V6-engine mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Together they produce plenty of power to please, and an EPA estimated 25 miles per gallon down the highway.
AWD makes the Traverse a player in notorious Northwest weather conditions with standard Traction Mode Select that allows the driver to make real-time adjustments to the vehicle’s driving mode to account for varying road conditions. If you step up to the plate for the High County, a standard twin-clutch AWD system optimizes traction for every condition it encounters and features an automatic locking rear differential.
My Traverse came with a Black Current Metallic coat of enamel that was augmented by 20-inch, machine-faced aluminum wheels, heated outside mirrors, rear-power lift gate, front fog lamps, roof rails, trailer equipment and deep-tinted windows.
But that’s nothing compared to the Traverse interior, that spoils and pampers with the best. Starting with leather-heated and ventilated front- and second-row seats, heated steering wheel, Bose premium 10-speaker audio system, tri-zone climate control, Chevy Infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, 4G LTE WiFi hot spot, surround vision rear-view camera and adaptive cruise control for starters.
If I had to cherry-pick my favorites, I’d go with the adaptive cruise, which is always nice and worry-free, even on a crowded freeway, and the Apple CarPlay feature. My daughter quickly synched to her iPhone and Spotify, and we enjoyed hand-picked Christmas songs from Pentatonix versus the inhumanity of listening to random songs on XM or FM.
There is a decent amount of space behind the third-row, but when that’s folded down, watch out. Room for just about anything the mind and wallet can conjure with still plenty of room for passengers. Definitely plenty of golf clubs!
Safety is not forgotten either. And with the Premier trim level, it’s all included. The highlights include low-speed forward automatic braking, forward-collision alert, lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning, following distance indicator, front pedestrian detection and IntelliBeam headlamps that operate automatically.
And for those of you that care, the Traverse is assembler in Lansing, Mich., and comes with a three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty and five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty.
