Volvo’s 2022 V90 Cross Country B6 all-wheel drive model provides owners SUV versatility in a crossover package that drives like a car.
The premium model is a five-door, five-seater built on the Swedish automaker’s advanced modular platform, finished with upscale materials and trim.
My tester was powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged and E-charged, direct-inject engine combined with a 48-volt mild hybrid system mated to an eight-speed geartronic automatic transmission. The combo delivers 295 horsepower, 310 lb-ft of torque, and 29 miles per gallon fuel economy down the highway as estimated by the EPA.
Volvo’s twin-engine plug-in hybrid delivers all the benefits of a high performance, low emission gas engine with an electric motor that delivers power on demand with ultra-low CO2 emissions and almost 30 miles of pure electric range. Its mild hybrid technology, meanwhile, offers drivers up to 15 per cent fuel savings, and emission reductions in real world driving situations.
Add all-wheel drive with instant traction, double wishbone front suspension, anti-lock braking system, and advanced electronic stability control, and you get all-season reliability and versatility, perfect for the Northwest climate.
Like its siblings XC90 and S90, the V90 carries the proud and confident face of Volvo’s design language, along with classic Volvo styling cues. Key features include the iconic “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlight design and the new grille. The exterior looks long, lean and as if it’s moving downhill.
Inside the cabin, Volvo has taken cues from the clean, Scandinavian interior design of its XC90 model and raised the bar with new details on the dashboard and instrument panel, including a 12.3-inch progressive driver display.
My tester included a climate package ($750) that adds heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel; lounge package ($2,800) with ventilated Nappa leather front seats, four-zone climate control, backrest massage, and four-way lumbar support; advanced package ($1,700) with graphic heads-up display, 360-degree view camera, interior illumination and advanced air cleaner.
Standard luxury and convenience features are supplied in abundance. My personal favorites included a panoramic moonroof with power sunshade, heated front seats, tinted windows, Bluetooth, and the upgraded ($4,000) Bowers and Wilkins premium audio system.
While at risk of burying the lead, Volvo’s renowned safety and security features put the V90 into the “solid buy” category.
V90 receives “Pilot Assist”, a driver assistance system with adaptive cruise control, low and high-speed collision mitigation, pedestrian, cyclist, and large animal detection, run off road protection, lane departure warning, blind spot information system, and cross-traffic alert with auto brake.
Other safety and security features include oncoming collision mitigation, front, side and curtain airbags with drive side knee airbag, whiplash protection system, power child locks, and side impact protection system.
Volvo provides a 48-month, 50,000-mile limited warranty and 144-month corrosion protection. The V90 is assembled in Gothenburg, Sweden.
