Movie reviews
“After the Sunset” H Heist movie that doesn’t seem interested in its own heist. Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek are diamond thieves retired to the Caribbean, but an FBI man (Woody Harrelson) keeps watch. Slapstick replaces good writing, but even that isn’t as much fun as it should be. (PG-13, for subject matter, language.)
“Alfie” H A tepid remake of the 1966 Michael Caine film, about a womanizing cad who learns his life is hollow. Jude Law, a fine actor, doesn’t have the bursting personality of a Caine, and setting the story in 2004 Manhattan seems completely irrelevant. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“Being Julia” HH In London in 1938, a great stage diva (Annette Bening) indulges in an affair with a younger man-thus revitalizing her acting. This is a civilized movie, based on a Somerset Maugham story, but it doesn’t have much urgency. Jeremy Irons co-stars. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” HH A sequel finds ditsy Bridget (Renee Zellweger) breaking up with boyfriend Mark (Colin Firth), only to be foolishly tempted by that rotter Daniel (Hugh Grant in prime form). There’s a general sense of sag, but Zellweger is still adorable. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“Enduring Love” HH A shocking accident involving a hot-air balloon (depicted in the startling opening scene) leads a guilt-ridden professor (Daniel Craig) into a bizarre relationship with a stranger (Rhys Ifans). Not much drama, and too explicit about its ideas, but interesting. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“Hero” HHH Color-soaked, high-flying action picture about a warrior (Jet Li) in ancient China, recounting his exploits to a king. Not on the “Crouching Tiger” level, but a fun movie with a good cast. With Maggie Cheung, Zhang Ziyi. (In Mandarin, with English subtitles.) (PG-13, for violence.)
“I (Heart) Huckabees” HHH “Three Kings” director David O. Russell delivers an “existential comedy” about a man (Jason Schwartzman) who hires detectives to figure out his life. A bright cast and larky spirit keep the movie going, even if it has a Swiss cheese quality at times. With Jude Law, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“The Incredibles” HHHH Terrific Pixar feature about a family of superheroes, who come out of forced retirement when needed. The action-movie element keeps it shy of the “Finding Nemo” benchmark, but it’s got wonderful characters and impeccable comic timing. (PG, for violence.)
“The Motorcycle Diaries” HHHH Before he became a world revolutionary, Che Guevara set out on an eight-month trip along the length of South America, with a buddy and a dubious motorcycle. This movie takes a somewhat romantic view of the journey, but it’s a great road movie and an absorbing character study. Directed by Walter Salles. (In Spanish, with English subtitles.) (R, for subject matter.)
“Napoleon Dynamite” HHHH Funny and sweet and weird, this movie chronicles the life of a high-school student in a small town in Idaho. He is Napoleon (Jon Heder), who lives in a heightened state of aggressive cluelessness that has made him an outcast. Director Jared Hess treats this bizarre world with a precisely observed humor that is never cruel. (PG, for subject matter.)
“P.S.” HH A woman (Laura Linney) in her late thirties becomes convinced that a young painter (Topher Grace) is somehow the reincarnation of a lover from her youth. Some sharp and funny scenes early on, but the movie seems to lose its way. (R, for subject matter, language.)
“The Polar Express” HHH A super-production adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s children’s book. Rendered entirely in computer animation that realistically replicates human beings (notably Tom Hanks), the movie should delight kids, although it’s more amusement-park ride than gentle bedtime story. (G)
“Ray” HHH Musical biopic of Ray Charles, with Jamie Foxx giving a spectacular performance (with Charles’ vocals). The movie ties up Charles’ traumas a little neatly, but otherwise it’s a brisk and funny tribute to a man who triumphed over blindness, poverty, and his own demons. Taylor Hackford directed. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Saw” HHH Grisly and fiendishly clever suspense-horror about two strangers who wake up in a room chained to the walls. This roller-coaster of a serial killer movie should please cult fans. With Cary Elwes, Danny Glover. (R, for violence, language.)
“Shall We Dance” HH Richard Gere is an executive, happily married, who furtively begins taking ballroom dance lessons, where he meets a beautiful instructor (Jennifer Lopez) and a wacky band of oddballs. There doesn’t seem to be much at stake in this remake of a Japanese charmer, and Gere barely registers the character’s changes, but the film provides some pleasure. With Susan Sarandon. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“Shark Tale” HH In the style of “Shrek” comes this rapid-fire animated collection of pop-culture references. It’s about a small fish (voiced by Will Smith) who pretends to be a great shark slayer, much to the irritation of a Mafia-style Great White (Robert De Niro). Not too memorable, and it doesn’t have the heart of “Finding Nemo.” (PG, for subject matter.)
“Shaun of the Dead” HHH A very funny zombie romantic comedy, with an underachieving London bloke (co-writer Simon Pegg) suddenly realizing that he must battle the undead. Not a spoof, but a zombie movie with a very robust, very black sense of humor. (R, for violence, language.)
“Sideways” HHHH Two old friends road-trip for a week in the Santa Barbara wine country, sampling vintages and meeting women. This melancholy comedy is full of keen observations, good wine talk, and some slapstick, and it’s beautifully acted by a cast led by Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church. (R, for language, nudity.)
“Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” HHH A piece of technological wonder wed to a rather hollow story, this movie’s grand visions of vintage New York City and Shangri-La are a marvel to look at. Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow try to save the 1940s world-which is entirely computer-generated. Angelina Jolie co-stars. (PG, for violence.)
“Team America: World Police” HHH From the “South Park” guys, a completely lewd, foul-mouthed, politically-incorrect spoof of Hollywood action movies, featuring a plot about terrorism. It’s all done with marionettes, of course, a style that provides many laughs-although by the end, when Hollywood liberals are being killed at a conference in North Korea, you may be reduced to staring at the screen in disbelief. (R, for language, violence, subject matter.)
“Vanity Fair” HHH The sprawling Thackeray novel focuses on Becky Sharp (Reese Witherspoon), an orphan making her way through vicious London society. A beautiful physical production with a great cast, the movie doesn’t quite hold itself together, and gets a little loopy toward the end. Mira Nair directs; with Gabriel Bryne, James Purefoy. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
