WHAT: Weeping Japanese maple, or Omurayama acer palmatum, has deeply dissected, palm-shaped leaves that provide interest from spring until late fall.
New foliage starts out bright orange around the edges in the spring and then turns green.
Its fall colors are striking golds and fluorescent reds. Long cascading branches form a skirt around the lower portions of the tree, making it a perfect specimen for a mixed privacy hedge.
SUN OR SHADE: Grow this tree in part shade with morning sun or consistently bright shade. Hot summer winds and sun can scorch its leaves.
SIZE: It can reach 10 feet high in 10 years. It also is a good selection for large containers.
SEE IT: You can find this plant in the Japanese maple grove at the Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett, www.evergreenarboretum.com.
