Mukilteo district top spellers honored

Mukilteo School District spelling bee participants faced the final challenge on April 14 at Explorer Middle School in Everett.

All participants from eight elementary schools received ribbons while the first-, second- and third-place finishers also received a medallion.

The winners were kindergartner Joshua Tran of Mukilteo Elementary; first-grader Lila Penney of Columbia Elementary; second-grader Erin McKibbin of Picnic Point Elementary; third-grader Leif Johansen of Serene Lake Elementary; fourth-grader Joey Shafer of Columbia Elementary; and fifth-grader Darrand Bourland of Endeavour Elementary.

Harbor Pointe Middle School honors

April’s theme for student of the month at Harbour Pointe Middle School was “risk-taker,” students who demonstrate courage and forethought.

Harbour Pointe Middle School students of the month:

Sixth grade: Lily Alimi, Luke Heckerman, Abby Kraft, Sarah Madalina and Josh Tolbert.

Seventh grade: Devon Catindig, John Messick, Cherie Ruan and Jenna Stupey.

Eighth grade: Rayla Freeman, Michael Hong, Laz Logan and Maya Peebles.

Everett High senior wins Davis award

The Davis Law Group recently named Craig Plendl of Everett High School the scholar athlete of the week for his outstanding commitment to academics and athletics.

Plendl lettered in tennis in his junior and senior years. He has maintained a cumulative 4.0 grade-point average in high school while taking a rigorous course load. He acquired 17 College in the High School credits with Everett Community College.

Craig is a National Society of High School scholar and a National Merit Scholarship-Commended Student.

Craig received the Everett district’s Scholar-Athlete Award for fall 2009 and Everett High School Boys Tennis Scholastic Award.

Jackson High grad gets media award

Lauren Bennett of Bothell was presented the Modern Languages and Literatures Outstanding Media Project Award at Moving-Up Day ceremonies held recently at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

Bennett is a junior at St. Lawrence and is majoring in global studies. She graduated from Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek.

Local student wins WSU scholarship

Washington State University student Nathan Petty was recently awarded a $1,000 Norma McKinney and Pat Roley Endowed Scholarship from the Washington State University Edward R. Murrow College of Communication.

Petty graduated from Marysville-Pilchuck High School in 2007 and is studying public relations and political science at WSU.

He is the son of Linda Kohl of Tulalip.

Providence General Children’s Association honors students

Ten high school seniors were honored for academic achievement and volunteer services by the Providence General Children’s Association on May 4 at the organization’s annual meeting.

Each student was awarded a $2,000 scholarship for the 2010-11 school year.

Scholarship recipients included: Sarah Beach, Glacier Peak High School; Nikita Cheema, Marysville-Pilchuck High School; Jerry Cloud, Archbishop Murphy High School; Sibani Das, Cascade High School; Joey Eichinger, Archbishop Murphy High School; Hannah Hawkins, Everett High School; Kaitlyn Kelly, Archbishop Murphy High School; Kaitlin Kloes, Cascade High School; Andrea Muffly, Snohomish High School; and Kate Stringer, Archbishop Murphy High School.

Local students on Azusa dean’s list

Several local residents made the academic dean’s list at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif.

The following students were honored for a fall semester 2009 academic standing of 3.5 or better grade-point average: Karl-Friedrik Overman of Arlington, Luke Laures of Camano Island, Fredrick Arnold of Coupeville, Lauren Solbakken of Edmonds, Molly Miller of Everett, Alexandria Schlafer of Mukilteo, Lisa Jones of Oak Harbor, Nicole Johnson of Snohomish, and Samantha Butler of Stanwood.

Meadowdale music students win in Pasco

Meadowdale High School students won several awards April 16 and 17 at the Columbia Basin College’s Jazz Unlimited Music Festival in Pasco.

Awards earned by Meadowdale High School students included Outstanding Concert Choir for the Meadowdale High School Chamber Choir; Outstanding Vocal Jazz Ensemble for Impressions; Outstanding Vocal Music Department; Vocal Jazz Sweepstakes Award; Waldo Spirit Award; Outstanding Rhythm Section Award; and Outstanding Soloist Awards for Evan DeVries, Nathaniel Hendrix, Todd Hollenhorst and Max Marcus.

Archbishop Murphy tops rice bowl goal

In late January, the senior class of 2010 set a goal for the Archbishop Murphy High School community for its annual Operation Rice Bowl Project.

The senior students wanted to raise $20,010 in honor of their graduating year. Through a variety of fundraising activities, they surpassed this goal by raising $25,010 for Catholic Relief Services.

Seniors Meg Balch and Sam Hogenson presented the check for $25,010 to J.L. Drouhard, director of the Missions Office for the Seattle Archdiocese on April 16.

Monroe student takes second in DECA contest

Monroe High School senior Janelle Davis placed second in the International DECA Career Development Conference from April 23 to 28 in Louisville, Ky.

DECA is a Delta Epsilon Chi association for marketing and management students.

Davis competed in the Food Marketing event. Her classmate, Max Echterling, was a finalist in the Marketing Management event.

The two competed against 180 of the highest qualifying competitors from the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Germany and Guam.

Everett senior earns college scholarships

Kaitlyn Kelly of Everett recently received a $24,000 Regents Scholarship from the Washington State University Regents Scholar Program for her outstanding academic achievement in high school.

Kelly is the daughter of Joelle and Tom Kelly of Everett.

Kelly also received a $2,000 Science Opportunity Scholarship from the WSU College of Sciences. Kelly is a high school senior at Archbishop Murphy High School. She plans to attend WSU in the fall to study business administration or medicine.

Arlington student wins EWU scholarship

Senior Amye Ellsworth of Arlington was recently awarded the Orland and Bernice Killin Scholarship for $6,000 to Eastern Washington University for the 2010-11 academic year.

The scholarship is awarded to incoming freshman with a cumulative high school grade-point average of 4.0 and who demonstrate scholastic and extracurricular excellence.

She will attend EWU in the fall, where she hopes to study English and prelaw.

Amye is the daughter of Wade and Patti Ellsworth of Arlington.

Arlington senior earns scholarship

Gretchen Stroh of Arlington, a senior at Stillaguamish Valley School, earned a Kimberly-Clark Foundation 2010 Bright Futures college scholarship.

Gretchen is the daughter of Timothy and Jolane Stroh.

The Bright Futures program awards college scholarships to children of Kimberly-Clark employees in the United States and Canada.

Each scholarship is worth up to $20,000 for full-time students studying at accredited colleges and universities.

Lake Stevens District Apple winners named

Lake Stevens School District employees were recently recognized for creating a positive, caring and productive school environment through exceptional dedication.

The April recipients of the Apple Award are: Sherry Wiggins, paraeducator at Lake Stevens Middle School; Lisa Ogden, physical education teacher at Sunnycrest Elementary; Kara Evanger, music teacher at Hillcrest Elementary; Sue VanWyhe, physical education teacher at Hillcrest Elementary; Shirley Osborn, family support specialist at Early Learning Center; and Lorilee Bennett, family support specialist at Early Learning Center.
