50 years ago (1962)
Kirke Sievers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verne Sievers, 910 Pacific Ave., would serve next year as treasurer of the Associated Student Body at Everett Junior College. He was elected to the post this week.
Laurel McCutchan, junior at Everett High School, was elected president of the school’s Future Teachers of America Club. Other officers were Don Cecil, vice president; Mary Westmoreland, secretary; and Richard Herbert, treasurer.
25 years ago (1987)
With a sequence of three, loud, clear “ayes” votes, Port of Everett commissioners agreed to sell 143 acres of property for $43.5 million to the U.S. Navy for an aircraft carrier base. The vote ended six months of controversial negotiations and committed the port to holding the land for sale to navy until next March 31.
Explorer Junior High eighth-grader Alicia Landis and Serene Lake Elementary sixth-grader Kris Harriss represented the Mukilteo School District in the regional spelling bee. Students in the district bee included Pove Hing, Huong Nguyen, Heather Mathews, Navy Moul, Jenni Roetcisoender, Karl Schweizer, Kim Schroder, Misty Hatcher, Tim Llewellyn, Carolyn Bates, Amy Hall, Josh Berger, Dawna Levang, Alex MacLeod, Christi Reed, Julie Soma, Mike Kooy and Emily Hankins.
