One measure of a good song is whether or not it can be covered.
After all, if the song is written properly, another group should be able to bend it to their will, right? With that in mind, I pulled together a handful of live covers that have been floating around the Web in this past week (or month).
Dig it:
The Smashing Pumpkins with Josh Groban – “Disarm” – Live
The video isn’t great on this, but the audio is serviceable, as the symphonic pop singer Josh Groban and the symphonic rock group Smashing Pumpkins team up for a standout from “Siamese Dreams.” It’s an unusual pairing that works better than you might first suspect.
Neil Young – “A Day in the Life” – Live
I posted a mediocre version of this cover by Neil Young in June, but thought it was worth revisiting. For one, the video and sound are better this time around. And for another, he covered it during his Oct. 21 Everett show. It’s hard to top the Beatles original, but Young does a great job at matching the Beatles’ studio trickery in a live setting.
Norah Jones – “Jesus Etc.” – Live
The first few lines of this Wilco song aren’t included in the video, which itself is a bit dark, but we get serviceable sound as Norah Jones covers “Jesus, Etc.,” off of “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.” Again: a good song gets a good cover.
