Waffles wed yogurt at MLT eatery

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Mountlake Terrace is joining the frozen yogurt trend – with a twist.

At the Melt Waffle and Frozen Yogurt shop, the frozen yogurt is intended to be a topping for the waffle, owner Eugene Yang said.

“One morning I woke up and realized there was no good waffle place,” Yang said.

So after playing around with the idea, his store was born.

The location, 4311 212th St. SW, was an easy decision, Yang said: “It’s a couple of blocks from my house.”

Another perk to opening a business in the city, he said, is how it benefits the community. It was an important consideration for Yang, who has lived there almost his whole life.

Melt Waffle offers a large variety of dessert and breakfast waffles. There are several different toppings, with everything from chocolate chips to granola to seasonal fruit. There’s a build-your-own option that comes with a waffle, a swirl of frozen yogurt and two toppings, or people can choose a predesigned waffle such as “Morning Mix,” which comes topped with granola, peaches, maple syrup and whipped cream.

“Melt Waffles are denser and chewier than a regular Belgian waffle,” Yang said, because they are made with dough instead of batter.

“We are also in the experiment stages to hopefully be able to offer whole-wheat and kosher waffles,” Yang said.

“When we opened we intended it to be a place for people to come sit down and relax but it’s more of a grab-and-go,” he said.

He remains hopeful that he will be able to make adjustments so his restaurant evolves to match his original vision.
