America’s most awarded EV lineup has just expanded and gotten even more user friendly.

The 2025 Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric SUV adds XRT trim, providing a rugged off-road capability to owners looking for more adventure. XRT also includes a bolder exterior, increased battery capacity, driving range, and innovative new features.

It is also the first Hyundai vehicle to be manufactured in the United States, at is Metaplant America facility in Georgia. IONIQ 5 also gains access to over 17,000 Tesla Superchargers in North America, thanks to its new charging port.

“IONIQ 5 has been a sales success for us since day one,” said José Muñoz, president and global COO of Hyundai Motor Company and president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America. “We’re continuing to give customers more of what they want by expanding the IONIQ 5 lineup with a dedicated off-road-capable XRT model, NACS port, design upgrades and a long list of features developed with customers in mind. We’re taking ‘America’s Most Awarded EV lineup from strength to strength.”

IONIQ 5 comes in Limited, SE, SEL, and XRT trims in both all-wheel and rear-wheel configurations.

XRT exterior highlights include pixilated camo patterns on the wheel arches, and front and rear fascias. It includes 18-inch, XRT-exclusive alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, a black rear spoiler and roof side rails.

IONIQ 5 is powered by dual electric motors complemented by a lithium ion battery system. It features a shift-by-wire gear selector and includes regenerative brake level control paddles. The Level 2 charger in my garage required eight hours to produce a full charge from 10 per cent battery life.

My tester came with standard all-wheel drive and a long-range battery pack that delivers and EPA-estimated 318-mile range. It generates 320 horsepower and can reach 0-to-60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. It seats five adults with a generous cargo area that expands with the second-row seats folded flat. It also includes a lifted suspension that increases ground clearance.

Creature comforts include smart cruise control, dual automatic temperature control, surround view monitor, heated front and rear seats, wireless phone charger, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, front and rear USB ports, Bose premium auto,12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with navigation, and H-Tex seating surfaces.

IONIQ 5 answered the bell on a drive with the in-laws that included traversing the Pioneer Highway to Burlington, then Chuckanut drive to Bellingham. All five occupants enjoyed plenty of leg and head room, a quiet cabin, rear vents for second-row passengers, and the smooth ride.

Completing Hyundai’s package are a host of advanced safety technologies that are designed to inspire driver and passenger confidence.

The lengthy list includes forward collision avoidance assist, lane keeping and following assist, forward attention warning, blin-spot traffic collision avoidance assist, parking collision avoidance assist, blind-spot view monitor, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, parking distance warning, rearview camera, safe exit assist, highway driving assist, remote smart parking assist, and surround view monitor.
