The Heatherwood Middle School PTA hosted a Tech Night with Microsoft on May 23 thanks to a $1,000 grant from the STEM + Families Initiative, a project of Microsoft and the National PTA. Heatherwood was one of just 35 PTA groups nationwide to receive the grant and the only group in Washington state.
The celebratory event included information for parents and students about careers in science, technology, engineering and math as well as related hands-on activities. One of those hands-on activities included manipulating robotic hands. Students assembled finger sensors, then used them to make a plastic finger mimic their own movements.
A film crew also was on hand to film a public service announcement about the STEM + Families Initiative.
