EVERETT — A 35-year-old Everett man who was shot by his roommate last fall now faces criminal charges.
Detectives believe the shooting happened in self-defense. They are not seeking charges for the 24-year-old shooter. The investigation recently wrapped up. It is now under prosecutor review, said Shari Ireton, spokeswoman for the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting happened Nov. 8 at the Bunkhouse Condominiums along 130th Street SE, south of Everett.
It apparently was prompted by an argument over “landlord-tenant issues,” Ireton said. The older man’s girlfriend was somehow involved in the argument, which turned into a fist fight before weapons were drawn. The girlfriend was not hurt.
The 35-year-old was wielding a knife when he was shot multiple times, Ireton said. He suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He spent time in intensive care before being released from Harborview on Nov. 25, hospital officials said.
The knife and a pistol were recovered from the scene. The shooter surrendered to deputies, cooperated with the investigation and was not arrested.
Detectives are recommending the older man be charged with second-degree assault, a felony. He reportedly has admitted to being a methamphetamine user.
Court records show the younger man sought a protection order after the shooting. It expires late this year. Neither man has any known felony history in Washington.
