EDMONDS — Ferry sailings between Edmonds and Kingston were canceled Friday morning after severe corrosion was found on the vehicle ramp, according to Washington State Ferries.

The route resumed in the early afternoon following repairs.

The issue where the vehicle ramp connects to the dock in Edmonds, called the “apron,” was first found in a routine inspection in September, agency spokesperson Hadley Rodero said. Maintenance was scheduled for overnight Thursday. But when crews arrived, they discovered the corrosion was more extensive after lifting a steel plate.

Crews were working Friday morning underneath the dock to repair the issue, Rodero said.

An alert from Washington State Ferries just after 10 a.m. reported the 10:20 a.m., 11:05 a.m. and 11:55 a.m. trips from both Kingston and Edmonds were canceled.

The agency expected to return to two-boat service Friday afternoon, barring issues with crew availability. Last year, staffing shortages forced drastic reductions in ferry service.

The Edmonds-Kingston route returned to regular service with the 12:45 p.m. boat from Kingston.

This route wasn’t the only one with significant disruptions going into the weekend. Sailings were also canceled on the route between Port Townsend and Coupeville. An issue on the steering system on the ferry Salish disrupted service Thursday and Friday.

On Friday afternoon, Washington State Ferries announced the Port Townsend-Coupeville ferry would return at 2 p.m. after repairs were completed.
