GIG HARBOR — Members of the Peninsula School District transportation staff in Gig Harbor launched an all-out effort to clean offensive graffiti from more than two dozen school buses before the vehicles had to get rolling Monday morning.
KOMO-TV reported it was 5 a.m. and still dark when the first staffers, drivers and mechanics arrived and spotted the red and black spray paint. In all, 25 buses were hit out of more than 80 district vehicles.
KOMO reports that employees looked up graffiti-removal methods on the Internet, then drove to stores and beauty shops to find bottles of nail-polish remover. They had most of the buses clean and in service fast enough to stay on schedule. About 5,000 students rely on the bus transportation.
Investigators say the vandals climbed a fence surrounding a large parking lot. Security cameras don’t cover the area where the vandalism occurred.
A Pierce County sheriff’s detective says some of the graffiti constitutes a hate crime.
