OLYMPIA — Washington state’s century-old governor’s mansion hosted its first wedding when Gov. Chris Gregoire’s elder daughter got married Saturday.
Courtney Gregoire, 28, married 30-year-old Scott Lindsay on the mansion’s front lawn, joined by more than 200 guests.
On Friday morning, the wedding party ran through a final rehearsal on the lawn.
“I’m pleased it’s a part of history,” Gov. Gregoire said. “This house is supposed to be a place where people come and enjoy it, but it’s a home, it’s family. What better way to symbolize the governor’s mansion as home and family than to have a wedding?”
Last week the state celebrated the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone for the mansion, initially built to host distinguished visitors who came to the state for the Alaska-Pacific-Yukon Exposition Seattle in 1909.
The couple announced their engagement last August at the Gregoire cabin in Hayden Lake, Idaho, where the family was vacationing. Gov. Gregoire and her husband, Mike, have another daughter, Michelle, 23, who is working on her mother’s re-election campaign.
Courtney Gregoire and Lindsay had considered other places to tie the knot but decided that the mansion was perfect.
“This is such a beautiful, historic setting,” Lindsay said. “It was a pretty easy choice for us.”
The couple said they will move back to Seattle from Washington, D.C., this fall.
Lindsay, who grew up in Washington state, works at the D.C. office of the Seattle-based K&L Gates law firm, and will be transferring to the Seattle office.
Courtney Gregoire, who grew up in Olympia, is leaving the staff of Sen. Maria Cantwell after working as legislative director and general counsel.
“I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do,” she said. “I’m embracing that for a while.”
